VS.NET 2010 Web Setup Projects: Extra BIN Folder

posted Sep 8, 2011, 11:42 AM by Eric Patrick
VS.NET 2010 Web Setup projects will take the Primary Output files of any web project, and install them automatically in a bin folder below the folder targeted by you.  To fix this issue, simply place the Primary Output of web projects only at the same level as Content Files.

For example, in VS 2005, the qbo.Setup.Mortgage project had this file layout:
  • Application Folder
    • bin
      • Primary output from qbo.Mortgage
      • Primary output from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • Debug
      • Debug Symbols from qbo.Mortgage
      • Debug Symbols from qbo.MortgageWeb
  • Web Application Folder
    • bin
      • Primary output from qbo.Mortgage
      • Primary output from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • Mortgage
      • Content Files from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • Templates
      • Mortgage
        • Content files from qbo.Templates.Mortgage
In VS 2010, this needs to change to:
  • Application Folder
    • Primary output from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • bin
      • Primary output from qbo.Mortgage
    • Debug
      • Debug Symbols from qbo.Mortgage
      • Debug Symbols from qbo.MortgageWeb
  • Web Application Folder
    • Primary output from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • bin
      • Primary output from qbo.Mortgage
    • Mortgage
      • Content Files from qbo.MortgageWeb
    • Templates
      • Mortgage
        • Content files from qbo.Templates.Mortgage
This has already been done and checked into SVN for:
  • qbo.CoreWeb
  • qbo.Debt
  • qbo.Mortgage
  • qbo.Credit
  • qbo.SkipTrace
If this is not done, the *Web.dll files will be placed into /bin/bin, and not be found. You can simply copy the *Web.dll files from /bin/bin to /bin to work around the problem, but better to avoid the problem in the first place.
